Microservices are commonly designed around bounded requests from predictable clients. Agents change that assumption. They can plan across services, retry after uncertain outcomes, fan out work, keep workflows alive for long periods, and create a new attempt when the previous one may already have changed business state.
In this session, you will explore the distributed-system consequences of allowing agents to drive service workflows. Through a representative claims-processing flow, you will see how a timeout can become an ambiguous side effect and how repeated planning can amplify load across downstream services. You will then examine how idempotency, backpressure, asynchronous messaging, sagas, outbox patterns, compensating actions, circuit breakers, bulkheads, and replay-safe state can contain these failures. The focus is on runtime behaviour, including how to distinguish agent traffic from human traffic in traces, set retry and fan-out budgets, preserve workflow state, and decide when a service should accept, defer, or reject further work.
What You Will Learn
How agent retries, fan-out, and long-lived workflows can weaken common microservice assumptions
How to use sagas, outbox patterns, idempotency, and compensation to handle uncertain side effects
How to define retry, fan-out, and degradation controls that prevent agents from amplifying failure
Who Should Attend
Software Architects, Distributed Systems Engineers, Backend Developers, Platform Engineers, and SREs integrating agents with service architectures. Practical familiarity with microservices, messaging, retries, and distributed failure is recommended.
