From Legacy to Cutting-Edge: Live Refactoring Java 8 to 24

Thu, 24 April

Get ready to transform legacy Java 8 code into a modern Java application that fully leverages the language improvements and performance enhancements from Java 8 to Java 24. In this live, hands-on session, we will refactor a legacy application, demonstrating why, where, and how to apply the latest Java features to write cleaner, more maintainable, and performant code.

By the end of the session, you'll learn to:

  • Simplify your code using helpful NullPointerException, local variable type inference with var, text blocks, and pattern matching for objects and primitive types.
  • Explore Data Oriented Programming concepts using sealed types, records, and record patterns.
  • Create highly performant applications using virtual threads and structured concurrency.
  • Drop old workarounds by using flexible constructor bodies, implicit classes, instance main methods, module import declarations, and String Templates.

Join us as we transform your understanding of Java and demonstrate how these new features can make your code more readable, maintainable, and efficient. Bring your Java skills up to speed with the latest innovations and best practices.

Target Audience: This session is tailored for Java Developers and Back-end Engineers who are maintaining or modernizing legacy Java applications. Software Architects may also find value in learning how to incorporate modern Java features into existing systems to enhance performance, readability, and maintainability. Tech Leads managing Java development teams will benefit from understanding these new features to guide their teams toward efficient code refactoring strategies.
