APIs designed for human developers often rely on documentation, informal conventions, and manual recovery. Autonomous agents are less forgiving. They can retry a non-idempotent operation, misread an ambiguous error, select the wrong operation, or continue using an interface after its behaviour has changed.
In this session, you will explore how to assess and evolve APIs for machine consumers without rebuilding every service. Using a representative API, you will follow its progression from a human-centred contract to an agent-ready design, examining discoverability, schema stability, idempotency, explicit side effects, error semantics, authorization, and lifecycle signals. You will see how OpenAPI 3.1, JSON Schema, Problem Details, Deprecation, and Sunset headers can address specific problems, and how contract tests and agent-aware monitoring can detect regressions. You will also learn how to decide which APIs need immediate work, where controls should sit, and when an interface is too unsafe to expose as an agent tool.
What You Will Learn
How to assess an API for machine discoverability, schema stability, idempotency, and lifecycle safety
How to design errors and side effects so autonomous consumers can recover without causing duplicate actions
How to use contracts, lifecycle signals, and monitoring to manage long-lived agent integrations
Who Should Attend
Backend Developers, API Architects, Platform Owners, and Engineers exposing services to AI agents. Experience designing or consuming HTTP APIs and reading API schemas is recommended.
